To commemorate Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Day 2024, the Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) collaborated with the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) to host an introductory workshop for the Seychelles Youth Brigade. This event took place on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at the STC Conference Hall.
Under the theme “Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future,” the division emphasized on the critical role of education in preparing and empowering youth for a disaster-free future. The session aimed to support and equipped the SNYC Youth Brigade as a volunteer network dedicated to assisting before, during, and after emergencies.
Participants received a comprehensive introduction to the DRMD’s mandate, operational structure, and the significance of the Incident Command System (ICS). They learned about the command levels; Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, related to the impact of emergencies, aligned with the National Integrated Emergency Plan (NIEMP).
Following this workshop, the division plans to conduct additional activities for further youth engagement and enhancing their participation in disaster risk reduction efforts. These initiatives will focus on building skills, raising awareness, and fostering a proactive approach to disaster management among young people in Seychelles.
The division is committed to empowering the next generation to play an active role in creating a safer and more resilient community.
Facilitators for this workshop included Ms. Jade Landry, Senior Risk Management Officer from the Education, Research and Information (ERI) Unit, alongside Ms. Juliette Jeanny, Ms. Annicka Chetty, and Army liaison Lt. Daniel Agnes from the Planning and Preparedness (PP) Unit.
