The Disaster Risk Management Division (DRMD) and the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs (MLGCA) host the second Biennial workshop, today, October 4th, 2024, at the Anse Etoile Community Centre.

The primary goal of this workshop was to improve understanding of critical systems, identifying gaps, and developing actionable strategies to strengthen resilience against natural disasters, including tsunamis.

Throughout Day 1, participants were provided with a thorough understanding of the incident command system utilized by the MLGCA. This system is critical for coordinating responses during emergencies, allowing for streamlined communication and effective resource allocation. The workshop also focused on identifying gaps within current disaster management practices and determining remedial actions. By critically assessing existing frameworks, the participants aimed to strengthen the overall disaster response strategy. Participants also discussed the shortcomings of the current reporting systems and areas for improvement.

Looking ahead to Day 2, discussions will center on district risk identification, planning, contingency strategies, and initiatives aimed at preparing Seychelles for tsunamis. Additionally, this workshop will lead to the establishment of an institutionalized Incident Command System within the MLGCA, alongside a roadmap to support the development of Tsunami Ready Communities and district contingency plans based on identified risks. This workshop marks a significant step forward towards disaster preparedness and response within our communities, as well as the collaborative effort to safeguard our communities against future disasters.
